4-H in North Carolina

since 1909 with the start of Corn clubs and canning clubs,

The story of the North Carolina 4-H Museum

that grew into the 4-H History & Learning Center really began more than 80 years ago in Cumberland County. It was there, in the depths of the Great Depression, that a young boy planted a plot of peanuts as part of a 4-H project and roasted them in his mother’s kitchen.

Millstone 4-H Camp Facts…

Millstone 4-H Camp opened in 1939 and has provided summer 4-H camps and year- round conferencing, retreats, and meeting space for thousands of North Carolinians in beautiful, natural surroundings.

Millstone 4-H Camp is nestled in the large loblolly forests of the Sandhills Wildlife Management Area (Richmond County, NC).

Millstone gets its name from the many millstones that were produced from the rock outcroppings near Millstone Creek.

The millstones were “blasted” and chiseled from the large rock and shipped for use in grist mills in the surrounding regions.

Today you can still walk the area at “The Rocks” and see evidence of blast marks and discarded millstones on the grounds.
